About the Project

A monk once asked Zen Master Un Mun, “Of the three Precious Jewels [buddha, dharma, and sangha], which is the most precious?
Without missing a beat Un Mun replied, “Sangha.”

United States of Dharma was born out of an idea: that social justice is fractal, beginning with inside ourselves through spiritual practice and reflecting that freedom in our interactions with each other. Buddha is our enlightened nature, Dharma is the teachings of that nature, and Sangha is the practicing community that brings the dharma alive. The Sangha is the realm of ethics, of social justice, of loving-kindness and compassion. Paying attention, bearing witness, keeping correct relationship, situation, and function, we widen our circle of skillful compassionate means until we truly “save all beings from suffering,” as goes the Great Vow.
